On March 18th, 2010 while helping in the cleanup efforts following the rainstorms that flooded much of the northeast, Eamonn, a DPW worker and volunteer Haworth Fire Chief was electrocuted by a downed high voltage line. This encounter has left him with severe pain in his legs and bound to a wheelchair for what doctors believe is a minimum of a year. During that time Eamonn underwent extensive physical therapy to walk on his own again. Their home required retrofitting so he would have access to a bathroom and bedroom. Many people from the community reached out raising $33,000 to help pay for the majority of the building materials needed to create a livable space. Giants of Generosity was called upon to help. After contacting dozens of local contractors, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and it’s members stepped-in donating over $135,000 in labor and materials and volunteered to complete the retrofitting of the home.
